Balaklava(Balaclava), The ruins of a Genoese (Genovese) Cembalo Fortress (Chembalo, Yamboli) in the Upper Town (of St.Nicholas)
And in that very place the Genoese erected the fortress of Chembalo(Cembalo) including the upper town (of St. Nicholas) and lower town. There were the council's castle, city hall and a small church. The remains of the Genoese fortifications are viewed in a good way on the top of the cliff at the entrance of the harbor.
In 1475 the Turks took over in the Crimea and captured Chembalo(Cembalo). Then the town acquired a new name Balaklava (aka Balaclava, Balyk-Uve[the Fish Nest or the Fish Pond], Balak-Kaya[the Fish Rock]). Disagreeable Crimean khans were kept in the fortress then.
Nowadays the remains of the fortress make a famous tourists' attraction. The performances of the knight tournaments often take place there.
